1. Application Process

Step 1: Review OPT Guidelines

Carefully review the OPT guidelines and consult with your DSO to ensure you meet all eligibility requirements.

Step 2: Request an OPT I-20

Submit the following documents to your DSO to request an OPT I-20:

• Completed OPT Request Form(provided by your university’s international office or DSO)
• (if required) Verification of Degree Completion Form
• (if applicable) Proof of payment for any administrative fees

Step 3: Receive OPT I-20

Your DSO will issue an OPT I-20 with the OPT recommendation(noted on the second page of the I-20 form).

Step 4: Prepare Application Materials

Prepare your OPT application package, which includes:

• Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization: This form can be downloaded from the USCIS website.
• Copy of OPT I-20
• Copy of Form I-94, Arrival/Departure Record (From the CBP website)
• Two passport-sized photos
  • The correct size of a passport photo is: 2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm) Head must be between 1 -1 3/8 inches (25 - 35 mm) from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head.
• Payment of the application fee (check the USCIS website for the current fee)

Step 5: Submit Application to USCIS
