1. Application Process

Step 1: Verify Eligibility

Before offering a position to an OPT student, verify their eligibility:

• The student must have maintained valid F-1 status.
• The job must be directly related to the student’s major field of study.
• The student must have received their Employment Authorization Document (EAD) from USCIS.

Eligible Work Authorization Categories for Unpaid Internships:

• CPT (Curricular Practical Training)

• OPT (Optional Practical Training)

• Green Card holders

• U.S. Citizens

Step 2: Provide a Detailed Job Offer Letter

Although an offer letter is not required to apply for OPT, employers should provide a detailed job offer letter once a job is secured, which should include:

• Company Letterhead: The letter must be on the company’s official letterhead.
• Dates of Employment: Clearly state the start and end dates of the internship.
• Hours per Week: Specify the number of hours per week the student will work.
• Job Duties: Provide a detailed description of job duties and how they relate to the student’s field of study.
